Pâté was the cutest, sweetest Syrian hamster you could ever hope to meet.

He belonged to a friend of mine, and even though I wasn't his owner, I had the luck of having known him from the very beginning. I was there the day he was brought home from the pet shop: a cute, little ball of fur who loved to explore his new little world. It was impossible not to fall in love with him.

I had the privilege of babysitting Pâté several times. The last time was for 6-7 weeks weeks, when he was already an elderly hamster, while his owners were taking care of some business. He was gentle and trusting in a very special way. His absolute favorite thing in the world was getting wrapped up in his blanket like a tiny burrito, and fall asleep with the most peaceful little face. Watching him sleep on my lap, rolled in his blanket, completely content and safe, could melt even the coldest heart.

I feel honored to have known him. His gentle nature left a mark on everyone he met. He was small, but the space he filled in our hearts was enormous. Pâté passed away of old age at 2 years and 8 months old, luckily without suffering; a full, happy life for a little hamster. This little corner of the internet is for him: a place to remember how sweet he was and how lucky we were to have him.
